Rogue One returning to IMAX theaters acts as a catalyst for Ryan and John to reassess the movie. We then discuss the Andor footage shown at those IMAX screenings before discussing Rian Johnson’s recent comments on returning to Star Wars and a few quick thoughts on Shadow of the Sith.
We return after a week off to catch up on Disney+ news, Mandalorian books being canceled, a few insights into the process of making the sequel trilogy, and a quick High Republic comics update.
Ryan and John discuss the Star Wars Hunters announcement, an update on Rian Johnson’s future Star Wars films, LFL’s clarification that Cara Dune will not be recast, and E.K. Johnston’s upcoming Padme book Queen’s Hope.
The bulk of this week’s show is focused on discussing what Benioff & Weiss’s leaving Star Wars could mean for the franchise’s future as well as what might’ve led to their departure. Ryan shares his experience seeing Knives Out (but says absolutely nothing about the plot, so don’t worry about that) and we also spend a few minutes discussing the most recent Mandalorian trailer.
After what has felt like a considerable draught in major Star Wars news this summer, this week’s show is packed with rumors and speculation about The Rise of Skywalker, Rian Johnson’s upcoming Star Wars film series, a possible (likely?) return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for Ewan McGregor in a Disney + series, and our reactions to the Star Wars Resistance season two trailer. So much to cover and quite a lot to say about each topic in this extra-large episode of the Blockade Runner Podcast.
Ryan’s audio this week is coming from Skype as his local recording malfunctioned, so if you notice that it sounds a little off, that’s why and we’re working on it and will hopefully have things back to normal next week.
All of us here at The Blockade Runner were horrified to hear last week that Kelly Marie Tran left Instagram/social media seemingly as a result of the disgusting harassment she’s been facing since she was cast in The Last Jedi. Inspired by Rose’s statement to save what we love instead of only fighting what we hate, we decided to put together an episode celebrating Rose and Kelly Marie Tran herself. Luckily the wonderful Laura Sirikul agreed to join us for this one, and we’re so glad she did! Laura has been a fan of Rose and Kelly since Lucasfilm first announced the character’s involvement in The Last Jedi; she’s the first fan to cosplay as Rose and has met Kelly Marie Tran too, so she’s the perfect person to help us celebrate one of the best parts of one of the best Star Wars movies! We start out by addressing the harassment and cruelty that toxic Star Wars fans (or whatever they are) have been spewing at Kelly Marie Tran, Kathleen Kennedy, and Rian Johnson in response to The Last Jedi before discussing some of the positive and inspiring reactions from the fan community. Then we spend the rest of the episode exploring the qualities and characteristics that make both Rose and Kelly Marie Tran such incredible new additions to the Star Wars universe.
Ryan and John discuss the bonus features on The Last Jedi home video release on this episode of The Blockade Runner podcast. We take a look at the feature length documentary The Director and the Jedi, our favorite deleted scenes, and touch a bit on the commentary too.
In this week’s Blockade Runner episode Ryan and John discuss the hotly debated Canto Bight sequence from The Last Jedi. Only we both really, really like it, so we’re not so much debating as we are high-fiving each other about how punk rock it is! This conversation was actually part of last week’s episode, but we split it out into it’s own thing because we think the Canto Bight sequence deserves a little more love than it’s getting.
A couple of Blockade Runners made an early morning trip to a Last Jedi screening just before the holidays and we took the opportunity to check in with Chris to hear about why he unfortunately didn’t love the movie (unlike pretty much everyone else involved with The Blockade Runner). This episode is brief as we recorded it in the car on the way to and from the movie, but if you didn’t love Rian Johnson’s first contribution to the Star Wars series you may enjoy hearing a similar perspective from Chris. Or, if you loved it like the rest of us on the show did, Chris provides an alternate take without resorting to insults and hyperbole.
This episode features Kevin, Jake, Jeremey, and John’s RAW and IMMEDIATE reactions to the totally crazy new Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi (don’t listen until you’ve seen the film!). We drove straight to a nearby restaurant as soon as the movie was over and just recorded our initial thoughts, so while there’s a bit of background noise and restaurant chatter, we think it’s worth it! We’ll be back with a more formal reaction show soon.
